About PowerBall
Launched in 2009 by Gidani, PowerBall adopted a 5/45 + 1/20 format before shifting to 5/50 + 1/20 in 2015. On 1 June 2026 Sizekhaya reduced the PowerBall pool to 1 to 16, introduced a R50 million starting jackpot with cascading jackpot rules, and renamed the PowerBall Plus add-on to PowerBall XTRA.

Prize divisions and payouts
Nine prize divisions. The jackpot requires matching all five main numbers and the PowerBall. Lower divisions pay for fewer matches, with the smallest tier (matching just the PowerBall alone) returning a guaranteed cash prize. Since June 2026 the jackpot is cascading, guaranteeing a top winner at least once a month.

Because the PowerBall is drawn from a separate 1-16 pool, the odds of any jackpot match are roughly 1 in 34 million — improved from the old 1-in-42 million.
